  • Start packing in advance. The sooner the better! Packing a box a day for a month is a much better idea than packing everything in one weekend.
  • Always label boxes clearly. The more information you put on your boxes the easier it will be to unpack.
  • Label your boxes with the Room name you want to put it in when you arrive at your new destination.
  • Use towels or clothes to wrap your more valuable items. This reduces the number of boxes you need while keeping your valuables safe.
  • Too much in one box can be hard to carry and risk breaking the box. Don’t be scared to pack more boxes.
  • Pack boxes to the top, too little in a box will mean they may collapse when they are stacked on top of each other.
  • Tape the bottom of boxes for extra strength. There’s nothing worse than having to repack the box because you forgot to tape the bottom.
  • Be sure to wrap any breakable or delicate items individually and write FRAGILE on the box.
  • When dismantling furniture, be sure to keep all nuts and bolts in a separate, small labelled plastic bag and tape it to a piece of the furniture it belongs to, or keep all small parts in labelled bags in a separate box.
  • Ensure any sharp items such as knives or work tools are sheathed or wrapped to prevent them from cutting holes in your boxes and label appropriately.
  • Don’t pack anything you’re going to need during the day — wallets, phones and your iPod, for example. It also pays to keep a box with some essentials such as pens, paper, coffee, tea, sugar etc.

If you have kids get them involved! Kids can find moving fun, scary and tiring all at the same time.

  • Get them excited about moving. The more they can help you, the better they’ll feel about moving.
  • Make them pack and label their own boxes of clothes and other unbreakables. You can even buy different coloured textas for labelling and designing their own boxes.
  • Take them to local parks or other fun places near your new home beforehand so they can have something to look forward to.
  • Pack an essentials bag for the kids so they have their favourite toys, snacks or clothing handy. You don’t want to go through 50 boxes in desperate search for Tommy’s favourite toy on the day of the move.
  • Ask friends or family to mind the kids when doing the actual move so they can arrive to their new room with all their packed boxes ready to unpack!

If you are moving with pets here are some tips that will help.

  • Remember to register your pets with your local council.
  • Ensure that your pets’ details are up-to-date / update their microchip details and ensure that the new contact number is on their tag.
  • Keep pet essentials handy for the move, such as water bowls, favourite treats or toys.
  • Avoid bringing pets to the new house until all the unpacking is done.
